We had the chance to interview Demetra to learn more about the roots of Sweet Spirit Apothecary, where she finds her inspiration, and even had her narrow down her favourite product to just one she recommends (although we agree with her, it is hard to choose just one!) Read more about this sweet soul below.
How did you get started with Sweet Spirit Apothecary?
My partner and I moved into a cabin between a forest and a lake in 2013 and I felt very inspired and curious by all the wildflowers, herbs, trees, and weeds growing in the area, so I decided to start learning about them. I researched 24/7; I would read about them and I experience their beauty and magic daily. The first products I made were a natural bug repellent and sunscreen. I set up on the side of highway 59 with about 3 or 4 other local makers: a honey guy, a guy that sold imported jewellery, a woodworker, and some veggie guys. We set up every Friday afternoon and it was always the highlight of my week. I was so grateful for each and every encounter I had; I met so many kind and interesting people and making a sale was a bonus! I remember coming home with honey, fresh produce, and $50….I felt like the most abundant person on the planet!
What is your mission statement and what are your values?
The first thing that popped up in my heart is to stay aligned with the heart. If the heart feels energized and full while working/crafting, I know I’m on the right path.
Tell us your experience as a female-driven business?
Honestly, the entire journey has been like a magic carpet ride! I haven’t experienced any kind of adversity in regards to being a woman in business. Perhaps this is because I lay low and keep to myself, and also because I’ve blazed my own trail. Sure there are some long hard days, and there are always unknowns, but in this particular aspect of my life, I’ve had complete faith and trust in the process. I swear, it is the faith and the love put into everything that has made it bloom so effortlessly.
I love my customers the most. I love hugging them. I love hearing their stories. I love laughing. I love that I can just be myself and that is enough.
Tell us about the trials and victories as a small business?
TAXES! Ugh. I feel like that is my only trial! I hate paperwork and numbers confuse me. And I never know when to stop ‘working’ because it doesn’t feel like working. I feel like this has maybe played a part in my social life taking a bit of a dive.
The victories— I’m a homebody and I thrive in nature, so being able to work from my little cabin in the forest is a DREAM come true. I also love being my own boss. Every day I feel excited to get up and get to work. My hands feel like they are full of infinite potential. I love that I get to create things every day….and actually, it feels like I’m creating the life I want every day! It’s the best! Also, markets are so much fun. I love connecting with my customers and I love witnessing their joy and connection to my potions! Mother Nature has gifts for everyone!
How do you cultivate work-life balance as an entrepreneur?
I still haven’t figured that out exactly. Just recently I worked extra hard so I could take a week off to have my friend from Whitehorse over. It was like a staycation….and it was magical. Naps and tea and comfort food and talks and walks. As soon as she left, I was back at it though! SO many ideas for potions…ALL the time. EEK!
What has been the best part of being a business owner so far?
I love creating my own reality. It feels empowering and freeing and most importantly, MEANINGFUL. I love my customers the most. I love hugging them. I love hearing their stories. I love laughing. I love that I can just be myself and that is enough. I don’t have to pretend to be something or try to please a boss. I really don’t stress about my job a lot. Except for those darn taxes! So confusing! Oh, and I don’t love the computer aspects of work, as I do everything off of my phone and it makes me feel dizzy.
What are your goals for the future?
My goal is to keep being thankful for what I have. To remain humble and grounded. To keep letting things unfold as they should. I would also love to sing more…as part of my offerings…!
What inspires you?
Flowers, trees, roots, soil, wind, the moon and sun, darkness and light, the seasons, spirit, love… the way everything turns to and reaches for the LIGHT! Moving to the forest beside a lake was the best decision my partner and I have ever made.
What pushed you to make the decision to pursue the life of an entrepreneur?
It was kind of an accident. I just wanted to make healthy natural products for myself…namely Sunscreen and Bug repellent and some natural skincare products. From that first market off highway 59, it just grew and grew! The inspiration grew so organically and naturally, and the customer base grew in the same way. Just being real with people and putting love and reverence into what you make goes a LONG way.
Just being real with people and putting love and reverence into what you make goes a LONG way.
What is your current favourite product you sell and why?
Ohhhhhh…this is tough. Just one? Mystic Calm Meditation Oil will always be one of my favourites. It has all of my favourite sacred oils like sandalwood, frankincense, palo santo, lavender, cedarwood… Also, my skincare line is so wonderful! I want everyone to use it! And anything with Blue Tansy essential oil in it!
